It is with great sadness that the committee
of Poetry-next-the-Sea
must record the passing of our founder
John Coleridge
at the age of 85.
John’s vision, insight, enthusiasm, and energy brought this unique festival into being in the 1990s, and his guiding spirit continues to steer our efforts towards making this an event of the highest calibre.
We are sure that you will all wish to extend your thoughts and best wishes, along with those of committee members past and present, to Myrna, John’s wife, and to his family at this sad time.
We will naturally be paying further and more detailed tribute to John and to his work on our website in the coming weeks and months, and will be particularly honouring his name during the May festival weekend (11th – 13th May).
.
The much-loved Poetry-next-the-Sea festival takes place annually over one May weekend in the charming town of Wells-next-the-Sea on the evocative north Norfolk coast. In the arena of literary festivals, we punch above our weight, showcasing poets of national and international repute in an intimate setting.
In addition, we run an Education Programme which places a professional poet in local primary and secondary schools in order to extend and enhance young people’s experience of poetry. Our very successful Poetry Competition offers writers the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and the Open Floor event offers a supportive platform from which they can share their work.
Poetry-next-the-Sea has made an enduring impact on the cultural life of north Norfolk over the course of the last fourteen years. We are continually striving to develop the festival in order to meet the high expectations of our local community and our dedicated audience
