Everyone associated with Poetry-next-the-Sea was deeply shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Helen on the 30th November 2006.
Helen was a remarkable woman of vision, talent, enthusiasm, dedication and strongly held principles; her contribution to Poetry-next-the-Sea is immeasurable. Helen joined the executive committee of the Festival during its formative months, in 1997. Recruited as Secretary, Helen's analytical and pragmatic approach swiftly transformed the administrative structure, making it both simple and efficient.
Our proud record of encouraging local school children to listen to, to read, to learn and to write poetry owes much to Helen's passions for literature and education. In memory of Helen, the "Helen Flanagan Prize" will be awarded annually to the young person adjudged to have submitted the best poem to the Schools' Poetry Competition.
Helen's fortitude in the face of ill health was an example to us all, as she steadfastly refused to allow it to dominate her way of life, not only in so far as Poetry-next-the-Sea was concerned, but also the many community organisations to whom she gave unstintingly of her time, energy and expertise.
The fact that we are seeking three volunteers to take on Helen's many tasks is a measure of her value, and our loss.
On the 11th December 2006, a bleak winter's day, a vast congregation gathered at Saint Nicholas' Church, Wells-next-the-Sea, to participate in an appropriate and moving tribute to this exceptional woman.
Poetry and education have lost a great champion, and we a kind, loving and loyal friend.
